Ensave Inc     |     CO     |     2008
This proposal plans to create an energy audit data collection training program. The goal is to establish a training and certification plan for data collectors who will perform and train producers in the data collection methodology. This will help analyze farm energy.
EnSave, Inc.     |     MT     |     2008
EnSave, Inc. proposes to meet the need for qualified energy auditors by creating an audit data collection training program for local conservation partners and other agricultural service personnel. The goals of the program are to establish a training and certification plan for farm energy audit data colelctions, and train local personnel in the data collection methodology. The training will be conducted in the classroom and hands-on, on-the-farmstead.
Green Start     |     NH     |     2008
Develop regional, hands-on, and published knowledge base of planting and harvesting oil seeds for bio-fuel in NH.
HARKINS AND COMPANY, LLC.     |     RI     |     2008
The purpose of this award is for the grantee to establish a silvopasture that will create a fertility-building, sustainable pasture that will nuture the land back to health while providing marketable products. Silvopasture plantations are common in the southeastern US as well as northern climes of Canada. Traditionally, these systems have been integrated into forest plantations being grown for timber or ornamental crops. To adapt the concept to Rhode Island, the project will explore the use of fruit trees which will better suited the small acreage farms and will provide specialty market crops. The goal is to demonstrate the sustainability of multi-purpose pastures that produce many crops at different rates. The resulting silvopasture will provide soil stability, nutrient recycling, and improved habitat.
HILDEBERTO VENTURA     |     RI     |     2008
The purpose of this award is for the grantee to demonstrate the use of a micro wind turbine (Skystream 3.7) as an innovative answer to on-farm energy savings and atmospheric conservation. The implementation of the micro wind turbine will maintain, restore, and enhance air quality by reducing the use of fossil fuel. By tracking the Skystream performance in real time, the grantee will calculate the savings and benefits of the system and post the monthly reports on the “What Grows in Rhode Island – News Blog – Energy” to provide technology transfer to other Rhode Island farmers.
JOSEPH HENRY BEUTH III DBA FLEURS INC     |     RI     |     2008
The purpose of this award is for the grantee to utilize solar energy to provide all the electrical power used on the farm to improve farm energy efficiency. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the barn to provide energy for the existing operation and planned expansion. The benefits include cleaner air and water by replacing electricity produced form fossil fuels with renewable solar power.
Laine Farms     |     NJ     |     2008
Establish a regional market for grass pellet biofuel using native warm season grasses.
LaMoure County SCD     |     ND     |     2008
Cropland (cover crop) and Rangeland Demonstration of Soil Health
Mark Kirby     |     NJ     |     2008
Create new ag commodities in the state while providing improved habitat for threatened and at risk bird species, secondarily monitor the affects of biochar on carbon sequestration in the fields
Merrimack County Conservation District     |     NH     |     2008
Create model for NH farms to use wood-based energy-efficient systems for farm-wide use.
