Iowa State University of Science and Technology will demonstrate the advantages of a relay intercropping system to maintain or enhance productivity and profitability while improving soil health and increasing nutrient reductions. A diverse intercropping system will add cropping system resiliency and promote a more diversified and stable community of soil organisms, from microbes to earthworms, while suppressing pathogens and crop pests and benefitting nutrient cycling and soil structure.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY     |     SD     |     2022
No-tillage and cover crop adoption are often very low when full season crops are grown in subhumid frigid soil because planting delays can reduce yields. Integrating no-tillage, with cover crops and enhanced nutrient management can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the return on investment. Combining these three components shorten the time to spring planting by warming and drying the surface soil. However, because these changes also affect soil microbial activity and N availability, the N management must also be modified. The failure to address the three-components simultaneous can contribute to yield reduction. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to demonstrate the importance combining the three legs of the stool, no-tillage, cover crops, and enhanced N management into a common system. This project will help producers overcome adoption barriers and it will build on an existing farmer network.

This project will develop an innovative method to manage invasive ants that form mutualistic relationships with crop pests. By integrating biocontrol (positive sense single-stranded RNA virus, +ssRNA), chemical control (liquid boric acid bait), and a revolutionizing delivery system (biodegradable alginate hydrogel), we produce a novel and sustainable ant management tool targeting bigheaded ants in agriculture, as the efficacy of boric acid hydrogel baits and the horizontal transfer of the virus identified among the ant colonies have been demonstrated in preliminary trials.

This project brings drought, forage, precipitation forecasting data together with ranch-specific forage measurement and modeling to help beef cattle producers on Tribal Ranches in the United States manage drought while maintaining conservation and operational goals.
GREEN HEFFA FARMS INC     |     GA, NC, PA     |     2022
Green Heffa Farms will promote innovative conservation approaches specifically targeting the unique needs and limitations of producers who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Project partners have recruited black women, beginning farmers to implement conservation approaches that reclaim traditional ecological knowledge to compare the effects of composting and mulching, cover cropping, conservation crop rotation, low-till to no-till, and herbaceous wind barriers. The project will focus on expanding knowledge of traditional medicinal plants and regenerative organic farming practices.

To demonstrate industrial Hemp cultivation with regenerative practices is an economically viable and scalable climate-smart rotational crop that improves soil health and sequesters carbon.

The project will apply an innovative approach using enhanced satellite imagery analysis for optimizing efforts to identify and clear invasive red cedar trees in the CN treaty territory. This proposal involves identifying land parcels that are most suitable for cedar removal through prescribed fire and the transfer of the associated methods for potential integration into the Rangeland Analysis Platform (RAP).
NC Foundation for Soil and Water Conservation, Inc.     |     NC     |     2021
New technology developing low-cost passive solar waste drying systems to assist farmers with addressing issues with handling bulky, wet manures as well as to facilitate transfers of manure from areas which have heavy nutrient buildup. The project will also review the economics of the system to make a business case for the product.
Maine Mountain Collaborative     |     ME     |     2021
The EFIF seeks to systematically pair philanthropic support with private capital to acquire and manage a forest that, given time, could not only produce more timber but also provide important ecological benefits ranging from improved wildlife habitats to increased carbon storage. If successful, the fund will overcome the financial constraints that currently limit the large-scale implementation of Exemplary Forestry management and other conservation practices, including NRCS cost-share practices in Maine and regionally.
