Practical Farmers of Iowa     |     IA     |     2021
This project will evaluate and quantify the ability of soil health management systems to improve economic and environmental performance of farms across Iowa. We will help farmers assess N fertilizer rates to corn in fields they have committed to soil health management systems. Ultimately, we hope farmers who have made a long-term investment to soil health will gain confidence to practice fertilizer reductions while maintaining crop yields.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture will encourage the widespread adoption of soil health practices across Colorado to achieve positive water quality, water conservation and on-farm economic benefits. This on-farm trial will create healthy resilient soils by providing technical assistance, incentive payments and market opportunities to producers.
Handsome Brook Farms, LLC     |     KY     |     2021
Handsome Brook Farm will support five beginning farmers in Kentucky to adopt climate-smart regenerative egg practices. This on-farm trial will establish on-farm manure management, storage, and distribution systems designed to reduce GHG emissions, and reduce on-farm soil erosion and drastically reduce watershed pollution through pasture enhancements and investments in housing infrastructure.
Maumee Watershed Alliance, Inc.     |     IN, MI, OH     |     2021
The project will demonstrate phosphorus recovery technologies (USDA QuickWash, Kendensha Multi-disc Roller Separator) at three different sites with the aim of illustrating 80% total phosphorus removal over extended demonstration periods. The WMA will also discern the market value of two resultant co-products - dewatered manure solids and Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) - to serve as a cost recovery mechanism and facilitate large scale adoption.
NYC Department of Sanitation     |     NY     |     2021
DSNY’s NYC Compost Project, working with Cornell University researchers, will study the quality of compost produced onsite at 10 community gardens and urban farms in NYC, compiling baseline data on the compost quality to determine technical assistance needed to produce higher quality compost for NYC urban growers.
Eagle County Conservation District     |     CO     |     2021
The project's primary goal is to assess how well Virtual Fencing can be applied to manage grazing of cattle at the rangeland scale and be implemented as an effective tool for grazing lands conservation, particularly in a rugged terrain that is topographically diverse which is characteristic of much of the rangelands of the Western U.S.
University of Kentucky Research Foundation     |     KY, MO, NY, NC, VA, WV     |     2021
The University of Kentucky Research Foundation will increase adoption of bale grazing to improve winter feed management for beef cattle farmers by demonstrating the practical, economic, and ecological benefits through proper implementation. Bale grazing is a novel winter-feeding method where bales are set out on pasture, typically in checkerboard fashion, and fed in a planned, controlled manner, much like rotational grazing.
Utah Association of Conservation Districts     |     UT     |     2021
Much of Utah's dryland agriculture still practices summer fallow with frequent full width tillage through the fallow period. The Utah Association of Conservation Districts will increase the adoption of soil health practices in Utah with this on-farm trail focused on diverse farming systems. The project will identify barriers to adoption and build regional collaboration focused on soil health.
Oklahoma State University     |     CO, OK     |     2021
The goal of this project is to demonstrate the benefits of virtual fencing to ranchers. Benefits will address livestock grazing management, wildlife habitat, and water quality from grazing lands. Additionally, guidelines will be produced for use by NRCS personnel to help ranchers adopt and successfully implement virtual fencing.
Northern Tilth     |     CT     |     2021
This project will involve working with six farms in Connecticut that have existing on-farm composting operations in order to minimize environmental impacts of the compost operations and maximize the quality of the finished compost. All of the farms included in this project have worked with the CT NRCS in the past, some of them have received cost-share funding from the NRCS for compost-related practices. The goal of the project is to develop a Compost Optimization Practice that would provide technical support to NRCS client-farms in order to improve the nutrient management and water quality benefits associated with composting manure and other organic matter-based by-products.
