This project is designed to build on the innovative tool of a novel publication using Internet and social media to reach new and beginning farmers with valuable tools to improve land management. Using its community-style, conversational approach, the publication will translate science for farmers and ranchers raising livestock on pasture, and make it accessible online in a weekly, easy-to-read format.

Through this outreach project, the Arkansas Land and Community Development Corporation (ALCDC) will assign a trained staff member to serve as a field agent to NRCS District Conservationists throughout a 42 county service area while at the same time serving as a mentor to historically underserved producers. This project proposes to increase the number of new EQIP applications for historically underserved producers in each of the four service area regions, increase awareness of new technology applicable to the operation, work one-on-one with producers to create farm management plans, increase the long-term profitability for participants through farm/ranch improvements, and increase collective knowledge of sustainable agriculture throughout the service area by conducting quarterly workshops and training seminars in each region.

The Institute seeks to address the resource concern of the denigration of water quality via working with seventy-five (75) farms at two (2) sites in the state of Florida, Indian River and Broward Counties. The project will serve Historically Underserved Producers, Veteran Farmers and Ranchers by implementing least cost innovative methods to reduce nitrate and phosphate run-offs and conserve on-farm Energy so that the target groups can minimize farm land erosion, reduce contamination of associated aquifers, and increase on-farm productivity and profitability through Energy conservation.

The Center for Rural Affairs proposes to increase soil health literacy among Nebraska farmers and to achieve the following objectives (1) teach women, veteran, and beginning farmers about conservation practices informed by soil and climate science and enable them to implement these practices; (2) enable women, veteran, and beginning farmers to effectively use federal and state programs for conservation while developing recommendations to improve these programs; and (3) engage Natural Resource Districts (NRD) and other conservation professionals the project to maximize impact and replicability.

North Carolina State University proposes to harmonize P-Index results across southern state boundaries and provide more robust factors in Indices. As these linkages occur across southern States, information can then be transferred to and from other regions (i.e., Heartland and Northeastern). This will allow continued coordination and communication with the other regions of the country, as well as the National P Index CIG Integration project.

First Nations Development Institute proposes to harness the momentum of the Association of Arizona Tribal Conservation Districts, an informal group of all 10 of the conservation districts in Arizona established by Tribal Council law. The project’s goal is to create an adaptable process for Native American communities to engage multiple and diverse stakeholders in developing community-wide conservation plans, and for Native American producers to leverage this momentum and information to create their own conservation plans. The effect of the development of these conservation plans will be to increase the ability of Native American tribes, entities and producers to participate in USDA programs and grant opportunities.

Wes-Mon-Ty Resources Conservation and Development Project proposes to demonstrate the establishment of multiple perennial and annual forage species unrecognized by NRCS Conservation Planners to improve pollinator Habitat, reduce erosion, address soil quality, and improve forage resources on both rotational and continuous winter feeding areas.

Proceeds from the Notes will help Iroquois Valley’s partner farmers increase profits while transitioning land to organic production. Soil Restoration Notes can serve as an investment model for other entities engaged in organic farming.

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay proposes to develop, pilot and promote new approaches to improve agricultural landowner access to environmental markets that will accelerate Farm-level conservation and improve the quality of water flowing to the Chesapeake Bay. The project will establish a number of conservation investment mechanisms to help offset the barriers associated with participating in three existing mitigation banking programs in Maryland and Virginia.
