Project Search

Since its inception in 2004, CIG has funded hundreds of projects, boosting natural resource conservation while helping producers improve the health of their operations for the future. Use this tool to search for CIG projects based on any of the criteria listed below.

CIG projects from 2004-2009 may be missing information in the following categories: Resource Concern (specific), Conservation Practice, Production/Use.

Title: Demonstration of the use of UAVs to survey and map active nest-sites to allow for the implementation of forest conservation practices during migratory bird breeding season and training of appropriate growers, land managers, and conservationists in their use for this purpose

Description: The use of UAV technology is growing rapidly in both the agricultural and ecological sectors, following the trend of GIS and satellite imagery and camera traps. The potential for UAVs in both arenas is only beginning to be tapped, and it is a very exciting time in the field, with early utilization proving significant value. By taking the detection of the nests off the ground and into the skies, and switching detection from the purely visual to the twin channels of visual and vegetation-penetrating infrared, this approach offers many advantages. Using aerial platforms, we eliminate the ground-based biases against heavy brush, inaccessible areas, and steep slopes. Aerial vehicles can also better adhere to sampling lines than a human observer can when traipsing through brush. In addition, the aerial platform surveys are non-intrusive, and does not disturb habitat. The utilization of infrared sensors will greatly improve the accuracy and precision of nest detection via heat signatures.

Lastly, UAV-based surveys will be faster than human based surveys, which will allow not only for quicker and cheaper surveys, but also for repeated survey’s over site during the restoration project, to ensure that nesting birds are not disturbed over the course of the project.
Keith Morter Farms     |     OR     |     2014
The project will be utilizing precision agricultural techniques in arid climate regimes and developing prescriptions to apply the correct amount of fertilizer based on rainfall and stored soil moisture.
Horry County Soil and Water Conservation District (Grant)     |     SC     |     2014
Demonstration of Soil Health With the Use of Cover Crops in the Pee Dee Area to Encourage the Adoption of Cover Crops in Extremely Dry Tillage Areas
Hood River County     |     OR     |     2014
The immediate and long-term purpose of this project is to improve air quality through the reduction of smoke emissions from burning agricultural waste wood in Hood River County. The long-term goal is to develop a knowledge base that the County and fruit growers can use to evaluate and develop programs that reduce or eliminate pile burning from all sources at a countywide scale. The air curtain burner project will provide data on the quantity of waste wood burned annually, the timing of burning for different types of material (green, diseased, small diameter, large diameter), and the feasibility of a larger equipment sharing or waste collection program.
H&R Engineering LLC     |     OR     |     2014
The project will consist of developing a HTML based computer program called Online Decision making And Record Keeping (ODARK) that will promote record keeping for nutrient management and be accessed on the internet.
Gettysburg College     |     PA     |     2014
Demonstrate the installation of a high tunnel and provide training on it's use to socially disadvantaged farmers.
EcoTrust     |     OR     |     2014
The project brings together a unique partnership of producers, technical experts, and buyers to develop a scalable and replicable forest carbon offset program for NIPF producers.
Duke Farms Foundation     |     NJ     |     2014
Duke Farms Foundation will work with a group of 4-6 EQIP eligible farmers to share information and techniques in a timely manner as well as to cover practical issues that arise in using a multi-species cover crop, to understand the individual farmers’ goals for participating in the NRCS program, determine how they measure their success, review the data on soil health and what appears to work and determine any barriers to their continued use of cover cropping systems. Duke Farms Foundation will hold at least 4 public programs and establish a demonstration for Duke Farms’ visitors and farmers over the three years – to promote the use of cover crops in the region, establish cover crop demo plot near farm , hold annual demonstrations of the roller crimper as part of the Professional Development Workshop series, present annually at the NJ Agricultural Conference, present information at annual Rutgers Twilight Meetings, and other public outreach.
Oregon State University     |     OR     |     2014
The project is to demonstrate the innovative strategy of conserving native pollinators by enriching pastures with large percentages of clovers. Testing of 7 clover species.
